Etiquette Guidelines
for a Baby Birth Announcement

Google

Sending a Baby Birth Announcement is possibly the most joyous message you will ever send to all your family and friends. To ensure that this merry occasion is not marred by a silly unintended faux pas, here are some guidelines for the basic etiquette for making Birth Announcements.

Who should you send the Baby Birth Announcement to?
A Birth Announcement is sent to share the fantastic news with all your close family and friends. So send the birth announcement to all your closest family and friends who you think would love to receive the news.

By when should you send the Baby Birth Announcement?
As soon as possible. The sooner the better. Most parents generally select the design of the announcement and the wordings well before the baby’s birth. As soon as the baby is born they insert the relevant details and dispatch the announcements. The maximum leeway you can take is about 6 months after the baby’s birth.

What information should be included in the Baby Birth Announcement?

  • The baby’s first and middle names are mandatory. Some people like to include the last name as well.
  • Most birth announcements start with a small poem or verse welcoming the new baby.
  • The date of birth, weight and height of the baby are also commonly shared.
  • Optionally, you can also add the time and place of birth.
  • Sign off with the names of the proud parents. If the new baby has any siblings then their names should be included in the Baby Birth Announcement as well.

Is the baby’s photograph required along with the Baby Birth Announcement?
No, it is entirely your choice whether to send the photograph or not. Many parents like to use the baby’s photograph as part of the announcement. Others prefer not to. Both practices are perfectly acceptable so do whatever makes you happy.

Is each Baby Birth Announcement accompanied by a handwritten message?
While a handwritten message is certainly a lovely gesture and most recipient would love it, the fact is that new parents rarely have the time to be so extravagant. Time is a commodity in short order and most parents are hard pressed just to send out the announcement. So no, a handwritten message is not expected.

How does one include grandparents in the Baby Birth Announcement?
Proud grandparents often want to send Birth Announcements to express their excitement over the birth of a grandchild. In such cases it is appropriate to include the names of the grandparents after the names of the parents and siblings on the announcement. Grandparents may print separate announcements but they should still include the names of the baby’s parents and siblings before their own. Instead, they could use their names in the poem. Something to the effect of:

“John & Sue (name’s of grandparents) are excited today,
And there’s reason don’t you say?
Here’s welcoming Mary Anne (name of baby),
Lets shower her with all the love we can!”

    - Sign off with parents names and names of siblings.

How does one announce an adoption?
In pretty much the same way that you send a regular Baby Birth Announcement. However, instead of the baby’s weight and height you may ant to include just his or her original date of birth. Some people like to include the date of adoption and city the baby was adopted from as well. But that’s individual preference so take your pick.
